According to Springfield's official history, Whacking Day began on May 10, 1775, when Jebediah Springfield drove the snakes of Springfield into the town square, where he beat them to death with a club. Now, every year on May 10, the good citizens of Springfield honor their town's founder by clubbing snakes to death.However, Bart discovered that the history of Whacking Day is a hoax. According to the tour guide at Olde Springfield Towne (aka The Pimple Faced Kid), Jebediah Springfield led an attack on Fort Ticonderoga on May 10, 1775; the same day that he supposedly whacked the snakes of Springfield.
After more investigation, Bart discovered that Whacking Day was actually made up "as an excuse to beat up the Irish." An Irishman responded: "But 'twas was all in good fun".
